POEM: “The man called it a mortar and pedestal”

May 12, 2026

The King’s English

By Anne Harding Woodworth

When the man called it a mortar and pedestal,

I thought back to the newscaster in Detroit,

who introduced a guest as

one of the most eridute people he’d ever known.

I guess we just have to let sleeping dogs lay.

–Woodworth lives in Washington, D.C. and is a frequent visitor to the Blue Hill Peninsula.

The Rising Tide welcomes poems and other artistic endeavors from our community, and showcases them here in our “Create” section.
