Talk of the Towns
How can Maine and our local communities get our fishing families living back where they belong – by their boats along the shore? The popular regional conversation series, Talk of the Towns, returns for its third year in Stonington starting Wednesday, November 19 from 7 - 8:30 p.m. on the second floor of the Stonington Town Hall in a roundtable format. The historic gathering space is at the center of the town’s Main Street, with accessible parking and entry from rear of the building.
The public conversation will mark the release of a final report by the Deer Isle-Stonington Housing Task Force, co-chaired throughout the past year by Stuart Kestenbaum and Travis Fifield. The report makes recommendations for how the two towns can accelerate the availability and production of workforce housing in ways that complement the work of the island’s two nonprofit developers, Island Workforce Housing and Homeport.
The evening will include a quick overview of what steps are already being taken and open into a conversation on actions we can each take to ease our regional housing – and with it, labor – crises.
The Talk of the Town events are room-wide community conversations on issues that bridge, matter to, and unite our regional communities. They are intentionally structured to include everyone in the room in addition to special invited guests, and each event’s direction is driven by what those attending most need to discuss and to learn.

Conscience by Joe DiPietro
New Surry Theatre proudly presents Conscience by Joe DiPietro. Margaret Chase Smith was a woman of firsts: In 1940, she was the first woman elected by the state of Maine to serve in Congress; nine years later she was the first woman the state elected to the Senate. And in 1950, she became the first senator to stand on the Senate floor and publicly rebuke Senator Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin, who rose to power using post–World War II anti-Communist hysteria and ruined the lives of those who opposed him. Margaret Chase Smith’s “Declaration of Conscience” speech was a public act of defiance at a time when both Democrats and Republicans were cowed into silence for fear of retribution. It came at a cost: She was shunned by her colleagues, challenged in a primary, and McCarthy threatened to expose her personal secrets. CONSCIENCE is the story of a remarkable woman who stood up for what was right and refused to back down.
Starring: Ellen Lancaster as Margaret Chase Smith, Matt Cornish as Joe McCarthy, Joe Hermans as William Lewis, and Moxie Wolf as Jean Kerr. Directed by Lori Sitzabee. Assistant Director Randall Simons. Performances November 7, 8, 14, 15, 21, & 22 at 7pm and 16 at 3pm at the Blue Hill Town Hall Theater at 18 Union Street in Blue Hill. For tickets visit www.newsurrytheatre.org or call 207-200-4720
