Blue Hill Heritage Trust Volunteer Day
Invasives are becoming an increasing problem all over the state, and Blue Hill Mountain is no exception to this issue. Recently, more and more community members are also noticing this issue. We've seen an increase in bittersweet along the trails, woods, and fields. Blue Hill Heritage Trust is in the process of formulating a plan for dealing with invasives across the peninsula. But, while we work on a multi-year plan, we need your help with trimming back bittersweet.
The volunteer activity will be cutting bittersweet by hand, and working in small groups on different sections of the mountain (field, trail, etc.).
They will meet at the Blue Hill Mountain Hayes Trail parking lot (the big one) on top of the hill, trying to start right on time at 1 pm. Folks are welcome to come and join us later if they can't be there at 1 pm (Look for us in the field and on the trail). Please bring plenty of water, hand clippers, loppers (or both), boots or closed-toe shoes (recommended), and work gloves. Blue Hill Heritage Trust will have extra tools for folks who need some (we have spare gloves if you don’t have any), as well as extra drinks and snacks.
For this day specifically, RSVP is not required, but it's highly recommended. Please, if you can, shoot me an email if you're interested in attending, so we can get a sense of participation numbers for the day.

Savor the Wild @ Stonington Public Library
Supporting Maine’s Blueberry Growers and Preserving Open Land by Winemaking
Join Stonington Public Library for an inspiring presentation by Michael Terrien, founder and winemaker of Bluet Maine Wild Blueberry Sparkling Wine, as he shares the story of Maine’s 10,000-year-old indigenous wild blueberry, exploring its rich ecology and cultural history. What began as a romantic, terroir-inspired journey has evolved into a mission to support the families who tend these wild fields by paying a premium for their fruit, recognizing the value of blueberry wine as a way to sustain blueberry fields and the iconic Maine landscape. Michael will highlight Bluet’s efforts to grow nationally and encourage others to craft blueberry wine, with a hopeful message about land preservation amid threats of development.
Michael Terrien is a California-based winemaker, born in Harpswell, Maine, on a fading saltwater farm. After swordfishing with Linda Greenlaw and earning a BA in philosophy, he moved west for a degree in Enology from UC Davis. Over the past 30 years, Michael has crafted wines, especially Pinot Noir, with a deep appreciation for expressing terroir. In 2012, he co-founded Bluet Maine Wild Blueberry Sparkling Wine, a crisp wine made from only Maine blueberries. Inspired by the belief that wine—at its best—should reflect the land, Bluet celebrates Maine’s indigenous blueberries and the extraordinary landscapes where they have always thrived.

Art Show Reception @ Blue Hill Public Library
For watercolor artist Jaeohk Keenan, painting heals the homesickness she has for her native Korea, which she left 45 years ago for graduate school. Keenan will show her watercolor paintings in the Blue Hill Public Library’s Britton Gallery and Howard Room during the month of September, in a show, “Light, Color, and Nature: Exploring New England.” Most of the paintings are of scenery in Maine. The public is invited to an opening on Friday, September 19, 4:00 to 6:00 p.m at the Blue Hill Public Library. For more information, contact the library at 374-5515.
Keenan says she is self-taught, and like photographers, prefers early morning and late afternoon light. These were convenient times to fit into her school and work schedules, but when time is short, she finishes her paintings in the studio after making careful notes about the lighting and mixing of pigments.
