Author Marie Dion to Speak at Blue Hill Public Library
The Blue Hill Public Library, in partnership with Blue Hill Books, will host author Marie Dion for an author talk and book signing on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. The evening will include a talk by the author, a question-and-answer session, and an opportunity for attendees to meet Dion and have books signed. Copies of Returning What’s Sacred will be available for purchase at the event through Blue Hill Books.

Sardineland Opening @ Penobscot Marine Museum
Penobscot Marine Museum reopens for the 2026 season on May 22 with Sardineland, an exhibit exploring Maine’s sardine industry and its impact on coastal communities, plus a special appearance by “Big Jim,” a restored 40-foot fisherman statue on campus for the summer. Exhibits are open May 22–October 10, Tuesday–Saturday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m., in Searsport.

Fairy Garden Tea Party
Island Community Center is hosting a Fairy Garden Tea Party, and you’re invited to step into a little world of magic! Sip & Snack: Enjoy freshly brewed fruit tea and sweet refreshments while we share a whimsical fairy tale. Create some magic!! After story time, we’ll head out to our own garden patch to build a tiny fairy village—complete with all the charm and sparkle your imagination can dream up! All materials are provided. It’s the perfect blend of creativity, nature, and a sprinkle of fairy dust.
Bagaduce Chorale presents: A Mass for Peace
The 80 voice Bagaduce Chorale will be performing Sir Carl Jenkins’ magnum opus “The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace”, under the direction of Bronwyn Kortge. This epic work uses diverse text to chronicle a descent into war, the horror of conflict, the desolate aftermath, and finally a tentative movement toward peace. First composed and dedicated to the victims of Kosovo, this will be the first time that “The Armed Man” is presented in Maine with the accompanying film, commissioned by Sir Karl Jenkins. The work is notable for its powerful, accessible melodies, and rich blend of musical genres.
Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the door. Students are free.
Mayfest at Barncastle with Naiad Country Brewing
We will be opening up our Barn for the season with one heckuva party, hosted by yours truly and our new neighbor, Spencer Janney of Naiad Country Brewing and recently-acquired Mainescape. Spencer will be releasing a special collaboration beer with Goodfire Brewing, and there will be multiple other breweries, winemakers, and artisans (Hot Freshies! Tapley Cove Oysters! Clayfield Farm!).
Advanced ticket purchases (AVAILABLE HERE!) are recommended, and include admission into the event, one drink ticket, and entry into a fabulous Swag Bag raffle.

Dance, celebrate, and support local food access at The Grand in Ellsworth on Sunday, May 24. The Soulbenders headline a benefit concert for FarmDrop and partners Healthy Island Project and Healthy Acadia’s Food for Health program, which helps connect local farms with food security organizations across the region.

Summer Scrappy Workshop
Join Claire Weinberg for a fun scrappy sewing session this summer!
Claire has had so much fun finding scraps in my “Quilters’ Frenzy” scrap buckets and she’s made these cute bunnies as an example. In this free workshop, she will guide you in making your own scrappy creatures. (With a few different techniques/options.) For summer, she has templates for fish, birds, and bunting. This will be a beginner friendly project and we hope to continue it seasonally!

Stonington Six Road Race
Celebrate the Fourth of July and support the Island Community Center during the annual Stonington 6 road race. The Stonington 6 departs from the Community Center parking lot on the morning of July 4th. Participants will run/walk/stroll through a 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) course. A one-mile “Fun Run” is also offered and great for younger or older participants. Registration includes a t-shirt and benefits the Island Community Center. Register here.

Have you ever wanted to create nature inspired art, but felt awkward about setting up your supplies in the middle of the woods or along the trail? Now is your chance to give it a try. Everyone is welcome, whether you are a trained artist or a hobbyist at heart. Once a month, May-August, meet up with BHHT’s Beth Dickens (a hobbyist artist herself) at various trails and be inspired by the scenery.

Castine House & Garden Tour
The Castine Historical Society’s House & Garden Tour returns on July 24, offering a self-guided look inside twelve distinctive homes and three gardens in the historic seaside village of Castine, with proceeds supporting CHS exhibitions, educational programs, and community projects; tickets are $50 per person through July 12 and $60 from July 13–24, with details and sales at CastineHouseTour.com.
Sargentville Thursday Club's Annual Quilt Raffle
For nearly 40 years the Sargentville Thursday Club has awarded scholarships for local youth seeking a college degree or trade certificate/licensure. We annually offer two stunning, handmade quilts for raffle. See the quilts in all their glory at the Blue Hill Public Library, where you can also buy raffle tickets for $5 each or 3 tickets for $10. The drawing will be held at our Annual Sale and Silent Auction at 11:30 am on 7/25/26 at the Sedgwick Elementary School Gym. Good luck!

Construct, carve, nail, screw, paint and otherwise fashion animals (real or imagined) from wood, and other found materials with artist and woodworker Aaron Margolis. Please bring 3 items which inspire you (reclaimed, driftwood, discarded, fresh cut logs, sticks, twigs, firewood, etc. please no pressure treated lumber). Tools will be supplied. Variable Movement is offering a free athletic performance testing clinic in Blue Hill that uses movement screens to spot “energy leaks” in your body—those small imbalances that can slow progress or contribute to nagging pain—so everyday athletes can move better in the gym and in daily life.

Exploration in Wood: A Hands-On Woodworking Workshop
A workshop based on curiosity and hands-on learning, we will build skills together in approachable woodworking techniques. We will deconstruct a log, to learn how the lifecycle/biography of a tree is made visible in its growth patterns and how we might creatively utilize different pieces of wood while considering the unique, individual qualities of the tree from whence it came. Embodying the perspective of an artist rather than an objective scientist, participants will explore a variety of woodworking hand tools and learn about how to achieve desired results with easily obtained tools. Reception for Blue Hill Library May Art Show featuring Robin Bowman
The Blue Hill Public Library will present “Sitting in the Mud: A Yearlong Walkabout in East Africa,” by award-winning freelance photojournalist and author Robin Bowman. The exhibition features large individual images and floor to ceiling photomontage panels on display at the library from May 4 through May 30. Prints of images will be for sale, with a portion of the proceeds going to benefit the library.

Deer Isle Adult Education: Kayak Safety Clinic (Bring Your Own Kayak)
Spring has sprung, and we can't wait to get on the water! Make sure you're prepared. Practice your kayak skills and/or get safety instruction in a sheltered, warm-water setting: the Blue Hill YMCA pool. This two-hour session offers 2 hours of independent practice OR an optional safety class and an hour of independent practice. The class covers self-rescue/wet exit instruction (i.e., what to do when your kayak flips). Kayaks/gear are NOT included in this course. Please bring your own.
