Senior Arts & Crafts @ Island Community Center
Join Island Community Center each week for a casual and creative time with friends. Expect: easy and enjoyable craft projects, a supportive and no-pressure environment, and a chance to socialize. All skill levels welcome!
Studio Walk-Through + End-of-Session Auctions
The end-of-session Studio Walk-Throughs provide program participants and the public with the opportunity to visit all the Haystack studios and view the work created during the session’s workshops. Walk-Throughs are free and self-guided.
A Silent Auction will be open throughout the duration of the Walk-Through. A Live Auction will begin at 5:00 PM. Auction proceeds benefit Haystack’s fellowship programs and studio improvements.
Youth Chess Club
Kids of all ages are invited to play chess at the Blue Hill Public Library on Thursday June 4 at 3:30 p.m. This will be the last meeting of the Youth Chess Club before summer break. Chess enthusiasts Tom Batt and Woody Petry will be on hand to teach beginners how to play chess and offer tips on chess strategy, while more experienced players can jump right in and play. Hands-On History for Kids
Kids of all ages are invited to Hands-On History at the Blue Hill Library on Saturday, June 6 at 10:30 a.m. Hands-On History will be led by staff from the Wilson Museum in Castine and participants will have a chance to try their hand at the drawshave, make a craft to take home, and learn more about what Hands-On History Days have to offer! This is a collaboration between the library and the Wilson Museum in Castine. Every summer, the Wilson Museum hosts Hands-On History Days, offering interactive, multi-sensory learning experiences for visitors of all ages, featuring demonstrations of traditional craft, opportunities to build your own mini boat, rotating kids crafts, and more! Summer Scrappy Workshop
Join Claire Weinberg for a fun scrappy sewing session this summer!
Claire has had so much fun finding scraps in my “Quilters’ Frenzy” scrap buckets and she’s made these cute bunnies as an example. In this free workshop, she will guide you in making your own scrappy creatures. (With a few different techniques/options.) For summer, she has templates for fish, birds, and bunting. This will be a beginner friendly project and we hope to continue it seasonally!
The Gatherings in Surry Celebrates 10 Years of Community
The Gatherings, a community center in Surry, is celebrating its 10th anniversary on Saturday June 6, 2026. The public is welcome to enjoy a cookout, silent auction, raffle and games starting at 2:00PM. The Leftovers, a music ensemble from East Blue Hill, will also provide live music for the event. The celebration will take place at The Gatherings located at 1208 Surry Road in Surry, Maine. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and side dishes. Softdrinks will be provided, or BYOB.
World Ocean Day: Celebrating Research to Understand Ecosystem-Human Connection
In collaboration with the Blue Hill Co-op, Dr. Charlie Rolsky, executive director of the Shaw Institute, will present the latest research on the impact of plastics on human health, PFAS contamination, and more! His talk will delve into the complex reality of plastic pollution, offering insights into a more sustainable future and highlighting the importance of connecting environmental health to human health, both locally and globally. Author Event: Jeanne Bartlett, “A Voice Downstream”
The Blue Hill Public Library will present an author event with Jeanne Bartlett for her book A Voice Downstream on Monday, June 8 at 7:00 p.m. A Voice Downstream collects Jeanne Bartlett's life work of poetry and prose, exploring nature, kinship, aging, loss, writing itself, and often the place these occupy within the larger world. Jennifer Militello, Poet Laureate of New Hampshire says “This is a book bursting at the seams with vivid pieces, all strung like bluebirds along the summer clothesline of this wonderful collection.” This program is free and open to all. Artist Rick Landesberg, “Using the Sketchbook to Respond to Places You Care About”
The Blue Hill Public Library will present a talk with the June exhibiting artist Rick Landesberg on Wednesday, June 10 at 7:00 p.m. Capturing an environment you care about in a sketchbook is a rich way to experience, and even celebrate, a place. Rick’s talk will present strategies for looking deeply at a place and responding to it through drawing. This won't be a studio art session nor will it be a “how-to-draw” class, but it will hand you a set of options, thought-starters, and opportunities. Recommended tools will be discussed as well. This talk welcomes both those who have significant and moderate drawing skills. Rick Landesberg, an artist and graphic designer, has led multiple sketchbook workshops in Pennsylvania, Maine, and France. Sing along or listen as PMM staff and volunteers lead an afternoon of sea chanteys and sailors’ songs. If you have a chantey to share, you are welcome to lead one. There will also be information about how these songs were used as work songs. Attend once or come regularly. All ages are welcome, and no experience is needed.

Set against the Edenic beauty of New England, Grafting unfolds through dual perspectives in a lyrical narrative that mirrors the art of joining two trees to create something stronger. 4-H June Jamboree
University of Maine Cooperative Extension in Hancock County is hosting the annual 4-H June Jamboree on June 13, 2026, at the Blue Hill Fairgrounds, 223 Ellsworth Road. This event, a beloved tradition for 4-H members and the wider community, promises a weekend of hands-on learning, outdoor adventures and family-friendly fun.
Exhibit: “Observations & Studies: Watercolors, Gouaches, & Oils” by Rick Landesberg - Reception
The Blue Hill Public Library will present “Observations & Studies: Watercolors, Gouaches, & Oils,” a solo exhibition by Maine artist Rick Landesberg, on view at the library from June 2 through June 29. The public is invited to a reception on Saturday, June 13, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. About the show, Rick offers, “Each of these paintings began with my strong response to a particular place—a quality of light, the rhythm of trees, a pattern of receding islands, sun burning through morning haze.” Rick was born and raised in Philadelphia and earned his degree in Painting from the Philadelphia College of Art and a Certificate of Studies from Central Saint Martins College of Art in London. Wednesday on Main welcomes The Newell Family Band to the 2026 Season:
Playing for contra dances and specializing in down east style fiddling as well as old timey and gypsy music. Carter Newell (Grampa) has been fiddling in Maine for over 5 decades. Maisie Newell, Eric Dayan, and their children perform with four fiddles and guitar, sharing old-time tunes from North Carolina alongside music Maisie learned during her travels in Eastern Europe. Three generations of fiddle tunes and a lot of fun in store!

Celebrate the Fourth of July and support the Island Community Center during the annual Stonington 6 road race. The Stonington 6 departs from the Community Center parking lot on the morning of July 4th. Participants will run/walk/stroll through a 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) course. Sargentville Thursday Club's Annual Quilt Raffle
For nearly 40 years the Sargentville Thursday Club has awarded scholarships for local youth seeking a college degree or trade certificate/licensure. We annually offer two stunning, handmade quilts for raffle. See the quilts in all their glory at the Blue Hill Public Library, where you can also buy raffle tickets for $5 each or 3 tickets for $10. The drawing will be held at our Annual Sale and Silent Auction at 11:30 am on 7/25/26 at the Sedgwick Elementary School Gym. Good luck!

Little Chucky heads to the Wild West to outwit outlaws in this cowboy adventure! With a fistful of bananas, Chucky rides into town on his trusty goat for a showdown with Big Bad Bart and his gang of bandits. (*please note that there are no guns in the show).

Preschool Playgroup in the Park

PhotoVoice Student Photo Exhibit
Project Launch has teamed up with Photovoice Worldwide to to offer an exciting new documentary photography workshop for high school students. Using photography, research and narrative, students dug in to the question "What makes our community special and what challenges does it face?" Time was spent in work sessions and in the field doing research, capturing images and crafting stories. The result is an impressive array of images and storytelling that gives voice to their experiences.
The Soul Benders Benefit Concert for Food for Health
Dance, celebrate, and support local food access at The Grand in Ellsworth on Sunday, May 24. The Soulbenders headline a benefit concert for FarmDrop and partners Healthy Island Project and Healthy Acadia’s Food for Health program, which helps connect local farms with food security organizations across the region.

The 80 voice Bagaduce Chorale will be performing Sir Carl Jenkins’ magnum opus “The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace”, under the direction of Bronwyn Kortge. This epic work uses diverse text to chronicle a descent into war, the horror of conflict, the desolate aftermath, and finally a tentative movement toward peace. First composed and dedicated to the victims of Kosovo, this will be the first time that “The Armed Man” is presented in Maine with the accompanying film, commissioned by Sir Karl Jenkins. The work is notable for its powerful, accessible melodies, and rich blend of musical genres.
Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the door. Students are free.
Mayfest at Barncastle with Naiad Country Brewing
We will be opening up our Barn for the season with one heckuva party, hosted by yours truly and our new neighbor, Spencer Janney of Naiad Country Brewing and recently-acquired Mainescape.
