Preschool kids and their caregivers are invited to join Ms. Jen at the Blue Hill Public Library for Little Artists’ Storytime on Wednesday, June 24 at 2:00 p.m. We will sing songs, dance, read stories with an art and creativity focus, and then work on our own masterpieces. Crafts will be process-focused, designed to emphasize the exploration and experimentation of materials, development of fine motor skills, and allowing kids to explore their creativity. Although designed for preschool aged children, siblings can also get in on the fun. This program may result in messy hands and clothes so please dress accordingly. Did you know that ants are keystone species in our forests and work closely with spring ephemerals? If you want to know more about this fascinating partnership, join Outdoor Educator Landere Naisbitt and Youth Services Librarian Claire Malina for a program on Ants and Plants! We will meet at the Blue Hill Public Library, on Wednesday, June 24 at 3:30 p.m. out on the lawn to study spring ephemerals, investigate ant behavior, play a capture the seed game, and try our hand at nature journaling. This program is free, thanks to the Friends of the Library. All materials will be provided. This is geared towards kids ages 5-12, but all ages are welcome. Playing for contra dances and specializing in down east style fiddling as well as old timey and gypsy music. Carter Newell (Grampa) has been fiddling in Maine for over 5 decades. Maisie Newell, Eric Dayan, and their children perform with four fiddles and guitar, sharing old-time tunes from North Carolina alongside music Maisie learned during her travels in Eastern Europe. Three generations of fiddle tunes and a lot of fun in store!

Author Event: Caroline Bicks, 'Monsters in the Archives: My Year of Fear with Stephen King'

The Blue Hill Public Library and Blue Hill Books will present an author event with Shakespeare scholar and Stephen E. King Chair in Literature at UMaine, Caroline Bicks, for her new book Monsters in the Archives: My Year of Fear with Stephen King on Thursday, June 25 at 7:00 p.m. at the library. Monsters in the Archives is a fascinating, first-of-its-kind exploration of Stephen King and his most iconic early books, based on groundbreaking research and interviews with King—all conducted by the first scholar to be given extended access to his private archives. Part literary master class, part biography, part memoir and investigation into our deepest anxieties, Monsters in the Archives—authorized by Stephen King himself and informed by interviews Bicks had with him—is unlike anything ever published about the master of horror. Meet Dash the Therapy Dog!

Kids of all ages are invited to come to the Blue Hill Library to meet Dash the certified therapy dog on Saturday, June 27 at 10:30 a.m.! Dash will be in the Larchwood Children's Room available for kids to meet, snuggle with, and read stories to if they so choose. Dash is a certified therapy dog and he loves to meet kids.  Jyl Hershman-Ross (Dash’s handler) is a Level 3 Tellington TTouch Companion Animal Practitioner.  She is a Behavior Consultant working with challenging, fearful, disabled, and shy dogs and an experienced Certified Professional Dog Trainer. Frogtown Mountain Puppeteers: "The Legend of the Banana Kid"

Everyone is invited to a free performance of "The Legend of the Banana Kid" by Frogtown Mountain Puppeteers on Saturday, June 27 at 6:00 p.m. at the Blue Hill Public Library.  "Little Chucky heads to the Wild West to outwit outlaws in this cowboy adventure!  With a fistful of bananas, Chucky rides into town on his trusty goat for a showdown with Big Bad Bart and his gang of bandits." Frogtown Mountain Puppeteers is a small puppetry troupe based in Bar Harbor consisting of three siblings – Erik and Brian Torbeck and Robin Erlandsen. They write and create all the shows they perform and have received three Citations of Excellence from UNIMA-USA, the highest national award in puppetry. The Blue Hill Library will host a discussion series with local retired teacher Bill Case on the book American Revolutions: A Continental History, 1750-1804, by Alan Taylor. The discussions will take place from 1:00-2:00 p.m. over three Tuesdays, June 30, July 14, and July 21, leading to the July 25 event with author Alan Taylor. The American Revolution is often portrayed as a high-minded, orderly event whose capstone, the Constitution, provided the nation its democratic framework. Alan Taylor, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, gives us a different creation story in this magisterial history. Bill Case is a retired high school and college history teacher with over fifty years of experience. In his career, Bill has taught U.S. History, AP U.S. History, Holocaust Studies, Public Policy and many other courses. This program is free and open to all, but space is limited, so registration is required and can be done at www.bhpl.net. Copies of the book will be available for checkout from the library. The Stonington 6 departs from the Community Center parking lot on the morning of July 4th. Participants will run/walk/stroll through a 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) course. Lucy Wijnands Jazz Quartet @ Barncastle

Vocalist Lucy Wijnands has been a fixture on the NYC jazz scene from a very young age. She's a regular at jazz clubs throughout the city and has toured all over the world. Winner of the prestigious Ella Fitzgerald competition and the recipient of a President's Award for music, She's also sang in a 16-week residency with the world-famous Birdland Big Band. Lucy is well known to spellbind audiences with a delivery that is at once sly and soulful, playful and wise. In addition to singing, she is equally passionate about the visual arts, and is a highly accomplished painter. Her original artwork will be on display for sale the night of the concert.Joining her will be Dan Nicholas on guitar, Chris van Voorst, bass and Aaron Seeber, drums.

Bagaduce Music’s premier fundraiser of the year brings Grammy-nominated ensemble Palaver Strings to David’s Folly Farm in Brooksville for an intimate acoustic evening of live chamber music, food, and community. The program, Serenades, spans genres, eras, and styles, with works by Carlos Simon, Maurice Ravel, Laurie Anderson, J.S. Bach, Josef Suk, and Glenn Miller, performed by Palaver’s musician-led string ensemble. Additionally, we will be tackling both trail maintenance and invasive species removal, scheduling these tasks on alternating weeks.

Everyone is welcome — no experience needed. Whether you’re a longtime supporter or brand-new, we’d love to have you.

The Blue Hill Public Library will present a talk on Monday, June 22 at 6:30 p.m. with art professor Christopher Scott Brumfield for his annual tour through LGBTQAI+ art and art history. Brumfield will touch briefly on many kinds of art and different manifestations of queer identity in art, and will discuss artists from Palestine, Ukraine, Iran, Indonesia, Cuba, Iceland, Congo, Sudan, Mexico, and other countries. This talk is appropriate for all ages, and everyone is welcome. Christopher Scott Brumfield is an artist, art teacher at Baton Rouge Community College, and writer from South Louisiana. HCDC June Meeting: All About Canvassing

The Hancock County Democratic Committee’s June meeting will be held on June 18th at 7:00 PM at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Ellsworth and via Zoom. Following brief business updates, guest speakers Anna Viertel and Abbie McMillen will present a workshop on canvassing and effective voter outreach. This session will focus on why face-to-face conversations matter, how they can help engage unenrolled and undecided voters, and ways to approach those conversations with confidence.

This month’s meeting will be held both in person at the UU Church in Ellsworth and via Zoom. Pre-registration for Zoom participation is required in advance by noon the day before the meeting at www.hancockdems.org.  You will receive a unique link that you will need to use to join the meeting.

The Blue Hill Public Library and Blue Hill Books will present a talk with author Margie Patlak for her new book, Insect Safari: Exploring the Wondrous World of Everyday Bugs on Thursday June 18 at 7:00 p.m. at the library. With her closeup photography, Margie will showcase the beauty of everyday bugs and their surprising capabilities, including using tools, farming, mathematics, recognizing themselves in mirrors, and navigating by starlight. She’ll also give you tips on how to find insects, and help you overcome any fears you might have of them. Margie Patlak is a science and nature writer, memoirist, and photographer. Fun With Freshwater Macroinvertebrates!

Join Blue Hill Heritage Trust for an afternoon of freshwater aquatic exploration! We’ll be diving into watersheds, water quality, and the insects that tell us about these things, macroinvertebrates. We will meet at the Patten Stream Preserve trailhead at 1 PM on Tuesday, June 16th. Participants should be prepared to get in the water. Sturdy shoes, sunscreen, and bug spray are recommended. This is a family friendly event. Length of program is 2 hours.

Join your neighbors and meet new friends at the Surry Contra Dance!


6-7pm Community Dance: easy and fun family-friendly dances. Dance or join the Open Band! No charge, donations welcome.
7-10pm Contra Dance: all dances are instructed, no partner or experience is needed! $15-$25 suggested, under 18s pay 1/2 their age.


These dances are year-round, every 2nd Saturday of the month at the Surry School, 754 North Bend Rd. Chem-free event!

Exhibit: “Observations & Studies: Watercolors, Gouaches, & Oils” by Rick Landesberg - Reception

The Blue Hill Public Library will present “Observations & Studies: Watercolors, Gouaches, & Oils,” a solo exhibition by Maine artist Rick Landesberg, on view at the library from June 2 through June 29. The public is invited to a reception on Saturday, June 13, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. About the show, Rick offers, “Each of these paintings began with my strong response to a particular place—a quality of light, the rhythm of trees, a pattern of receding islands, sun burning through morning haze.” Rick was born and raised in Philadelphia and earned his degree in Painting from the Philadelphia College of Art and a Certificate of Studies from Central Saint Martins College of Art in London. The show will be available for viewing starting June 2, subject to the Howard Room meeting schedule. For more information, contact the library at 374-5515.

Big Jim Celebration at Penobscot Marine Museum

The Penobscot Marine Museum will host a free public celebration welcoming the iconic Big Jim to the museum’s Route 1 campus in Searsport on Saturday, June 13 at 2 p.m. The Big Jim Celebration will feature live music from The Hot Suppers and BookHead SweetTooth, along with free admission to the museum, including the featured exhibit, Sardineland. The public is invited to enjoy an afternoon of music, history, and community as the museum celebrates one of Maine’s most recognizable roadside figures.

Visible Mending Workshop

Join Sara Beth Casburn, from Jam Brook Farm in Searsmont, and the Stonington Public Library for a fun, educational workshop on visible mending on Saturday, June 13 from 10 am - 12 pm. Participants of all ages and experiences are encouraged to bring a project they would like to mend by hand. All the supplies you need are provided for this FREE workshop.
