Discussion Series: “American Revolutions: A Continental History, 1750–1804”

The Blue Hill Library will host a discussion series with local retired teacher Bill Case on the book American Revolutions: A Continental History, 1750-1804, by Alan Taylor. The discussions will take place from 1:00-2:00 p.m. over three Tuesdays, June 30, July 14, and July 21, leading to the July 25 event with author Alan Taylor. The American Revolution is often portrayed as a high-minded, orderly event whose capstone, the Constitution, provided the nation its democratic framework. Alan Taylor, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, gives us a different creation story in this magisterial history. Bill Case is a retired high school and college history teacher with over fifty years of experience. In his career, Bill has taught U.S. History, AP U.S. History, Holocaust Studies, Public Policy and many other courses. This program is free and open to all, but space is limited, so registration is required and can be done at www.bhpl.net. Copies of the book will be available for checkout from the library. For more information contact Kayleigh at kayleigh.thomas@bhpl.net or 374-5515.

Though she has called many places home, she now lives on the coast of Maine where she paints ghosts, writes about monsters, and wanders seaside cemeteries. Writers’ Gathering Returns July 15

Word and the Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance are sponsoring another informal get-together for local writers on Wednesday, July 15, at 6 p.m. The event will be part of Gather, a long-time MWPA program that offers writers at all levels of experience six opportunities a year to get together for camaraderie and conversation. Gather events take place simultaneously at various sites around the state on the third Wednesday of alternate months.

Word, the Blue Hill literary arts festival, is hosting this month’s event at Marlintini’s Bar & Grill, 83 Mines Road, Blue Hill. Gather has no agenda other than getting together with a community of fellow writers to talk writing, reading and life. Gather events are not open readings, manuscript exchanges or organized writing-prompt sessions, but offer opportunities for the literary-minded to meet and plan any of those things and more.

No reservations are necessary. Information: wordfestival.org or 374-5632.

Discussion Series: “American Revolutions: A Continental History, 1750–1804

For more information contact Assistant Director Kayleigh at kayleigh.thomas@bhpl.net or 374-5515.

Historical Cooking Demo: Fried Fish

Historical Cooking Demo: Fried Fish

Join Joseph Greeley, docent at the Jonathan Fisher House and historical cooking enthusiast, for an outdoor cooking demonstration of a historical recipe and technique. On Saturday, July 11, Joe will be cooking up fried fish with lemon butter anchovy sauce. This recipe comes from the 1753 Ladies’ Companion cookbook, and could very well have been used in the Fisher household, especially as we have evidence that Jonathan Fisher frequently went fishing for his supper. He noted in his diary for July 25, 1800, “Went A.M. with Mr. H. a-fishing. Caught about 9 1/2 lbs. trout.” Stop by to see the process of interpreting the recipe and cooking with period techniques, and enjoy samples when the food is complete!

The free cooking demo will begin at 1:00 PM and visitors are encouraged to watch and ask questions during the process. Tours of the interior of the Fisher House are available from 1:00-4:00 PM, with a $10 suggested donation. Visitors are also welcome to self-tour the grounds and tool exhibit in the Slaven Barn on the property. For more information, call (207) 374-2459 or email contact@jonathanfisherhouse.org.
