Brooklin - A new seasonal restaurant serving Maine-made sausages, lobster rolls and house-made ice cream has opened in the heart of Brooklin.

Astro, located at 1 Bay Road, welcomed its first customers Friday, June 12. The restaurant is open Thursday through Monday from noon to 7 p.m. for dine-in and takeout and plans to remain open through mid-October. It will continue selling pints of its handmade ice cream year-round.

The menu features Maine-made sausages, hand-cut curly fries, Stonington lobster rolls, fountain sodas, beer and wine. A centerpiece of the operation is its slow-churned ice cream, made in-house using Maine eggs, milk and cream.

The restaurant offers outdoor seating with picnic tables beneath a canopy of trees overlooking Friend Memorial Public Library in the center of town.

Owner Matthew Carter brings experience from several well-known local restaurants, including the Brooklin Inn, the Brooklin General Store, Aragosta and the Roaring Lion.

The building previously housed The Morning Moon Café, a Brooklin fixture since 1984. Carter said the name "Astro" pays tribute both to the former restaurant — a nod to the moon — and to his first vehicle, a 1994 Chevrolet Astro van.

Astro is located at 1 Bay Road in downtown Brooklin and is now open for the summer and fall season.
