BROOKLIN—Deer hunting season for Maine residents using firearms opened Nov. 1, and it was a good day for Linwood Emerton, who shot a 13-point, 178-pound buck in Blue Hill.

Emerton registered it at the Brooklin game inspection station operated by Rita Grant.  As of 1 p.m. on the 1st, Emerton’s was the largest deer of the day. By that time, a total of 18 deer had been registered in Brooklin–11 bucks and seven antlerless deer, meaning does or males with antlers of less than three inches–coming from hunting locations on Long Island, Deer Island, Blue Hill and other nearby areas.

As of Nov. 3, a total of 1,179 deer have been harvested thus far in the area’s Wildlife Management District, which comprises Hancock County and the Bangor area. Statewide, more than 13,000 deer have been taken thus far, according to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

Deer season continues through Nov. 29, with additional dates open for muzzleloaders and archers in selected areas.

Remember to wear blaze orange clothing while in the woods during hunting season, whatever activity you may be engaged in.
