STONINGTON—The 2026 season of the Stonington Farmers Market will begin with a soft launch Friday, May 22, and continue weekly on Fridays from 10 a.m. to noon at the Island Community Center campus in Stonington, according to a press release from the town.
This year’s market will operate in a slightly shifted location because of ongoing construction and improvement projects at the former Stonington schoolhouse at 43 School St., according to the town. Officials are asking visitors to follow posted signage and pedestrian access routes because the campus remains an active construction site.
The former schoolhouse, built in 1905, has served as a Small Business Center since school consolidation in 2001 and currently houses up to 18 local businesses, artists and entrepreneurs. The building is also home to the town’s new Connectivity Hub, part of a statewide initiative through the Maine Connectivity Authority aimed at expanding digital access, workforce development and community health resources.
The town has partnered with organizations including Haystack Mountain School of Crafts and Maine Center for Coastal Fisheries on the project.
Construction is underway on a new elevator tower that will make the building fully accessible under the Americans with Disabilities Act, improving access to businesses and community programs housed there.
Visitors to the market will also be able to see the town’s new solar microgrid demonstration project. The project includes four parking spaces covered by solar panels installed at the Island Community Center parking lot. Town officials said the system is designed to generate enough renewable energy to power the Connectivity Hub and includes battery storage connected to both the building and a backup generator.
A public display showing the project’s energy production and cost savings is expected to go live within the next month.
Public parking for the farmers market will remain available alongside the ballfield and in downtown Stonington. Pedestrians are asked to access the market via Memorial Lane or the Pink Street Walking Path and to use the crosswalk at the ballfield when crossing School Street.
Town officials also encouraged residents to participate in future community planning efforts and complete a community survey available through the town website.
