For the third year in a row, Stonington merchants and non-profit groups are sponsoring a wide range of activities for the Christmas holidays, including pop-up shops, craft workshops, concerts and a tree-lighting ceremony on the town waterfront, featuring Santa Claus arriving by fire truck, hot cider and choral music. The tree lighting will start at 4 p.m. Dec. 14 at Hagen Dock.
“The kids are going to love it,” said Linda Nelson, Stonington’s Economic and Community Development Director.
The Home for the Holidays celebration got underway on November 29 and continues through December 19, culminating at 6 p.m. that evening with a holiday music concert at the Stonington Opera House.
Nelson said visitors will enjoy wandering “downtown after dusk to see the harbor sparkle—lobster trap trees, cheerful shopfronts, and light-filled pathways.”
A few of the activities include:
A pop-up bakery sale of cookies, pastries and other treats from Straight A Makery from 3 to 7 p.m. Dec. 11 at Island Approaches.
A kids craft day with instruction from noon to 2 p.m. on Dec. 13 at Aragosta. Registration required.
A community reading of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol on Dec. 14 at the Opera House. Volunteers may sign up in advance to read sections of the book.

Home for the Holidays is organized by the Stonington Economic Development Committee and sponsored by 27 Fathoms Waterfront Grille, 44 North Coffee, Boyce’s Motel, Deer Isle Adult & Community Education, Greenhead Lobster, The Island Agency, the Isle au Haut Boat Company, Maine Center for Coastal Fisheries, and Opera House Arts.
