THE U-TURN: GSA holds ArtsFest, Penobscot opens bridge
May 26, 2026
OUTDOOR CLASSES: George Stevens Academy held its annual ArtsFest on May 21-22, a springtime tradition where students ditch the regular classroom for creative workshops, music, and outdoor excursions. Above, students paddled Wight’s Pond in Penobscot with phys ed teacher Dan Kane. At the end of the week, the community gathered on the front lawn of the school for a two-hour student concert featuring jazz numbers, singing, and steel drums.
BRIDGE CEREMONY: Penobscot had what select board chair Harold Hatch called a “soft grand opening” of its new bridge over Mill Creek on May 20. The area along Bayview Road had been shut down for a month during construction of a new culvert. To commemorate the moment, Penobscot road commissioner Bill Hutchins drove his 1930 Model A Ford truck across the bridge with a special guest on board: Hap Grindle, the town’s oldest resident. Born in Penobscot, Grindle has lived in town for the majority of his 96 years, minus a couple of years in the Boston area. “I couldn’t take it. I’m really a hick at heart.” Many will know Grindle from his decades working at Snow’s Plumbing in Brooksville. A more formal dedication for the bridge is scheduled for July 12.
