Youth Chess Club is back!

Kids of all ages are invited to come play chess at the Blue Hill Public Library on Thursdays at 3:30 p.m. starting October 30th.  Chess enthusiasts Tom Batt and Woody Petry will be on hand to teach beginners how to play chess and offer tips on chess strategy, while more experienced players can jump right in and play. Participants of all experience levels are welcome. Tom Batt is an English professor at Maine Maritime Academy and Woody Petry is a retired professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences. The library will provide chess boards, but participants are welcome to bring their own. Everyone is welcome to attend this free event sponsored by the library, made possible by the Friends of the Library. For more information, contact Claire at claire.malina@bhpl.net or 374-5515.

Tech Class: Privacy for Seniors

On Thursday, November 6 at 10:30 a.m. the University of Maine Center on Aging will present a tech help class on managing your privacy at the Blue Hill Public Library. In this introductory lecture, participants will learn how ads target us online, how to limit tracking, and where to find browser settings and extensions to better control how our information is shared. Participants will also learn some of the key features of password managers and why they’re a safe and secure option. This program is co-sponsored by the library, Healthy Peninsula, Senior Planet, Americorps Seniors and the University of Maine Center on Aging, is free and open to all, but registration is required and can be done at www.bhpl.net. For more information, contact Kayleigh at kayleigh.thomas@bhpl.net or 374-5515.

The Y.A. Cafe

Teens ages 12+ are invited to join Teen Services Librarian Kendall Chapman at the Blue Hill Public Library on Friday, November 7 from 3:30-5:00 pm for The Y.A. Cafe. This is an open, monthly group for teens to come socialize, have a small snack, and enjoy a tasty beverage. There will also be board games to play, along with crafts and art projects. This is a fun, casual environment to hang out in after school. This free program is sponsored by the library thanks to the generosity of the Friends of the Library. If you have any questions, please contact Kendall at kendall.chapman@bhpl.net or call 374-5515.

Harvest Books for Kids

Everyone is invited to this family-friendly event to make pop-up books to celebrate the harvest season on Saturday, November 8 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the Blue Hill Public Library. Shannon Kerner, local book creator and artist, will teach participants how to create their own pop-up books to take home. Many fun ideas will "leap off" from the page; haystacks, vegetables from the garden, a sunset, a dahlia, a scarecrow or a crow... whatever your imagination can "spring up" from a square fold, and/or a V fold pop-up.  Participants will use paper, scissors, and glue to make their pop-up books and all materials will be provided by the library. Shannon Kerner is a book conservator, bookbinder, and marbler living in Midcoast, Maine. Thanks to the generosity of the Friends of the Library, this event is free and open to all.  For more information, contact Claire at claire.malina@bhpl.net or call 374-5515.
