Officials report strong turnout at local polling stations

BLUE HILL–Maine voters headed to the polls June 9 to choose party nominees in several high-profile races for governor, Congress and the U.S. Senate.

Democrat Graham Platner won his party’s Senate nomination to challenge incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins in November, while former Governor Paul LePage captured the Republican nomination in Maine’s open 2nd Congressional District race.

No winner has officially been declared yet in Maine’s 2026 gubernatorial primaries. Both the Democratic and Republican races are headed to ranked-choice voting because no candidate received more than 50% of first-choice votes on June 9.

On the Democratic side, Nirav Shah led by a slim margin as of June 10, with Hannah Pingree and Shenna Bellows close behind. In the Republican field, Bobby Charles held a comfortable lead of 37 percent statewide, but still not enough to prevent a runoff.

Final nominees will be determined after ranked-choice tabulations are completed. Officials plan to start tabulating results on June 12.
