Island Workforce Housing (IWH) will hold three information sessions this month about its new one- and two-bedroom apartments in Stonington at Thurlow’s Way on Cemetery Road.

The 12 new apartments, which will be available June 1, are designed for middle-income housing needs, according to a press release from IWH. The group raised $2.4 million for a final project cost of about $3.6 million, allowing them to only seek a construction loan for one-third of the cost. Those savings are then passed on to the renters.

“The permanently affordable rents are possible due to the generosity of many private donors through charitable contributions as there is currently no state or federal funding for middle-income housing,” IWH said in a press release.

Located within walking distance of downtown Stonington, the units are designed for energy efficiency and are heated and cooled with electric heat pumps. Rents will range from $750 to $1,525 per month.

The Thurlow's Way apartments follow the group’s other project, Oliver’s Ridge in Deer Isle, “which has provided homes to island teachers, restaurant staff, fishermen, office workers, and service providers–and their families–since the summer of 2023,” IWH said.

The year-round housing will be available to households with at least one member working full-time in Stonington or Deer Isle and earning between 80 percent and 140 percent of the area median income, which in 2026 is about $54,000-$94,500 for a single person and $77,000-$135,000 for a family of four.

The information sessions will be held:

  • Tuesday, March 10 at 6:30 pm at the Island Community Center in Stonington

  • Saturday, March 14 at 10 am at the Island Community Center in Stonington

  • Tuesday, March 17 at 6:30 pm at the Deer Isle Town Office

Those interested in leasing an apartment are also encouraged to visit the IWH website. for more information and application materials. Applications will be accepted until April 1. If there are more applicants than apartments, a lottery will be utilized, IWH said.
