STONINGTON–Town officials will join nearly 50 Maine communities in hosting free, volunteer-led walks through town on May 2 as part of the international Jane’s Walk event. The event is free and open to the public.
Jane’s Walks were created in honor of Canadian-American activist and author Jane Jacobs. Jacobs was a “community development” activist and the walks are designed to “emphasize the power of individuals to influence the places they live,” the release said.
According to the release, the walk will explore “the many changes Stonington has experienced” in the 250 years since the passage of the Declaration of Independence.
The walk will start at the Commercial Fish Pier and proceed down Main Street to the Deer Isle Granite Museum, the release said. There will also be “several short stops along the way,” and will culminate with a discussion and refreshments at the museum.
The event coincides with the town’s launch of a “community-driven process to update its Comprehensive Plan” and “in the midst of a Village Partnership Initiative Planning project with MaineDOT,” the release said.
“This is a relevant time for this walk as the Town has two planning processes in the works that will guide its future for several years to come,” said Linda Nelson, Stonington’s Economic and Community Development Director in the release.
“Resilience is the hallmark of this town, and community resilience and engagement is what is needed in light of some of the challenges we are facing,” said Kathleen Billings, Stonington town manager in the release.
According to the release, this is the fifth year Maine communities have officially participated in Jane’s Walks, and past walks in Stonington have attracted dozens of participants. More than 60 Jane’s Walks are being held around the state this year.
