VERONA–An overnight theft left Sweet Cheeks Bakery without fuel for its delivery van on the morning of June 2 after gas was siphoned from the vehicle. Owners Jonathan Beal and Mike Roy announced the theft in a post on the bakery’s Facebook page, but, while they condemned the act, they expressed sympathy for folks who are struggling with the rising cost of living and high gas prices.

“I sympathize with people,” said Beal. “We’re in that [same] position.”

Beal said his driver filled up on gas at the end of his shift on Saturday. On Tuesday morning, the van’s gas cap was off and the gas gauge read zero. Beal estimates that $40 to $50 of gas was stolen but said that the incident had a broader impact as well.

“When you decided to siphon gas from our van last night, you not only stole from Mike and I,” Beal wrote on Facebook, “but you also stole from the 40+ people that work Sweet Cheeks and their families.”

Moving forward, Beal said he will adjust its cameras to keep the van in sight but is confident in the resilience of his small business. “We've got broad shoulders and we can take whatever is going to happen,” he said.
