‘The Frugal Crafter’s’ process for summer landscapes

BLUE HILL— Maine artist and YouTuber Lindsay Weirich, a.k.a. The Frugal Crafter, came to Blue Hill to paint landscapes of Curtis Cove, taking advantage of one of the last few days of summer. Weirich, of Orrington, has been posting videos on YouTube for 12 years and has gained a following of nearly 600,000 subscribers.

In Blue Hill, Weirich used oil paints for her finished pieces, but warmed up with several quick thumbnail watercolor and chalk sketches to assess if her setup would make a “viable painting.” 

Weirich said she goes to a new spot each week during the summer to paint a beautiful Maine landscape.

“I try to scout out locations that look nice, and then I just go there. I pack up my materials and hike on in,” Weirich said. 

When asked how she decides what she will specifically paint, Weirich said: “I just pick a direction and go, and sketch whatever's in front of me. And then abandon it if I don’t like it with the watercolor, and then once I find something I like, I spend more time with the oil painting.” 

In the winter, Weirich said she paints a lot of still life, as the option to be outdoors in any Maine landscape is limited considering the cold weather, and the many hours it may take her to finish a piece. 

“I just paint what’s inspiring, things that strike an interest. It might be an ordinary thing or an everyday object to someone else, but if you can find something that looks interesting, you can show non-artists how artists see the world,” Weirich said.
