Thanksgiving thanks: A poem for the holiday
By Sue Shaw
The turnips are all peeled and cooked
Potatoes mashed and done.
The yams are in brown sugar sauce
(they’re loved by everyone).
The green bean casserole is set
The yeast rolls shine like gold.
The stuffing’s crisp, the gravy’s smooth
And the salad’s crisp and cold.
The turkey’s a perfect golden brown—
It’s a picture perfect meal…
But the heart of this foodie holiday
Is really how we feel!
When we give thanks for what we have…
What we should mean is not…
The turkey on the table….
It’s those around it that are the “what”!
We could be eating hot dogs…
Or soup or this year’s deer…
It’s who we eat it with that counts
And it always should be clear…
That the bounty we’re most grateful for
Is seated around the table
And we’re so very thankful
For everyone that’s able…
To gather and be home once more
To give hugs from our hearts…
To share a meal, and how we feel,
As the winter season starts!
