New murals to be taped along library walls

Local teachers will have an exhibit of their own tape art

BLUE HILL-Tape Art, the art form and the collective, will be coming to the Blue Hill Public Library in October.

According to a release from the library, “Tape Art is a street art collective that uses adhesive tape to create large-scale, temporary murals on the sides of buildings. Headquartered in Providence, Rhode Island, they regularly hit the road to make art in towns and cities around the United States and abroad.” The collective has created over 500 murals, and often shares its art form in schools, community centers and hospitals.

The Blue Hill Public Library will host a series of events with Tape Art regarding this art form, involving local teachers and students.

An “Artful Inspirations” exhibit, for example, will feature six Blue Hill school art teachers’ tape art within the Britton Gallery and Howard Room throughout the month of October. 

Students from area schools will also attend a workshop at the library taught by artists Michael Townsend and Leah Smith on Oct. 1, where students will create “temporary art directly on the walls of the library in response to their teacher’s artwork, creating a one of a kind mural,” according to the release. 

There will be an additional workshop on tape art that is open to the public on Oct. 1 from 3-5 p.m., followed by an art reception and the Friends of the Library Volunteer Appreciation event from 5-7 p.m. And for the fourth and final event of the day, Townsend and Smith will host a presentation and Q&A about the history of Tape Art.
