BROOKLIN—The Board of Trustees of the Friend Memorial Public Library will host its annual Cakes & Authors Party on Thursday July 9th from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on the library grounds. Now in its ninth year, the event is “the library’s way of thanking its patrons and the community for their continued support,” a press release said.

According to the release, six authors will be on hand to discuss their work and the writing process, and to autograph books. The authors include:

  • Libby Buck, of Blue Hill, earned her PhD in art history from UNC-Chapel Hill where she has taught for over a decade. Port Anna is her debut novel.

  • Basha Burwell, of Brooklin, is an art director and photo stylist. The Maine House books are her creative collaboration with Maura McEnvoy and Kathleen Hackett.

  • Sarah Dillard, of Brooklin, writes and illustrates picture books; her books include Blueberry Cake, I Don’t Like Rain, the early reader graphic novels series Extraordinary Warren, and the Mouse Scouts chapter books.

  • Buddy Doyle, of Gardiner, is a designer, photographer, and writer.  In 2024 he published Where Maine Reads and this year published Maine’s Still Reading.

  • Stephen Hindy, of Brooklin, is a former Associated Press correspondent based in Cairo and Beirut, and co-founder of the pioneering Brooklyn Brewery, recently published the historical biography The Ali Hindy Story:A Muslim Immigrant in 20th Century America.

  • Jeffrey Lewis, of Castine, is the winner of two emmys and a number of other awards for his television work - he was a co-writer/producer of Hill Street Blues -  and has published nine novels. Among these are four that are set in Maine:  Meritocracy:A Love Story, Adam the King, Bealport, and Land of Cockaigne.

The release said the library will offer complimentary servings of ‘locally baked’ cakes, cookies, and bars. Music from jazz pianist Scott Cleveland will accompany the event, along with free books, children’s crafts, and our popular free raffle with prizes donated by Brooklin business owners and participating authors. The raffle drawing will be held at 2:00 p.m.

Friend Memorial Public Library is in “the midst of a transformative capital campaign to renovate and expand its beloved 1912 building,” the release said,  including the creation of the Anne and Maynard Bray Maritime Research Center, which will house two nationally significant maritime collections.

“The event is a celebratory and historic moment for our community,” the release said. “And we welcome all to be a part of it.”
