THE U-TURN: Black bear spotted in Brooklin

May 18, 2026

Kevin Poland, of Brooklin, recently spotted this beautiful black bear on Hale Hill road in Brooklin. Photo courtesy of Kevin Poland.

After seeing the bear, Poland shared this fascinating tidbit: “Originally Brooklin and Sedgwick were one town, when they split up Brooklin first called the town Port Watson. Because there were so many bears in town, a common nickname for it was Beartown. There still are many bears around, with many sightings in the Naskeag and Fly Point sections of town.”
