THE U-TURN: Civil War Monument receives a makeover

Plus, new lobster statue appears in Sedgwick

The 141 year-old Civil War Soldiers monument sitting at the front of the Blue Hill’s Seaside cemetery received a makeover on Oct. 14 from Jim Dow and Ciona Ulbrich, aided by a 16-foot ladder.

Dow, president of the Blue Hill Cemeteries Association,n regularly volunteers time cleaning stones in the cemetery.

“It’s bothered me that this magnificent historical sculpture has grown increasingly covered with lichen,” he said. “I do not know when it was last cleaned, but it really deserved attention. It stands eighteen feet high so cleaning it presents a certain challenge.”

Commissioned by the Blue Hill Post of the Grand Army of the Republic, local sculptor William M. Howard created the monument from granite cut from a quarry near Greene’s Hill. It was installed in a lot donated by the town in the Seaside cemetery on Memorial Day, 1855.

There are 101 monuments dedicated to Civil War veterans in Seaside Cemetery.

Meanwhile, in Sedgwick, another sculpture has appeared.

FernCrest Acadia, located in Sargentville, unveiled a blue lobster sculpture by Joe Rizzo of Brooksville on Sunday, Oct. 4.

Rizzo is best known for his Chance sculpture — a 14-foot brook trout in Ellsworth. Caleb Scott, owner of Ferncrest Acadia, has been planning this blue lobster since last summer.
