Stunt doubles will jump off bridge for film Reversing Falls

BLUE HILL—The Blue Hill Falls Bridge will be closed for most of the day on Wednesday, Sept. 16 while filmmakers shoot a scene for an upcoming film.

The crew for Reversing Falls, a new independent feature film about a young woman who returns to Maine to learn about boat building, will reroute traffic along alternate roads during the closure from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. while they shoot a scene of people jumping from the bridge. Locations manager Mac Gaither said the road will be reopened briefly while the actors and crew have lunch. Emergency vehicles will still be able to drive across the bridge throughout the day, he said.

For decades, the former bridge, officially named the Stevens Bridge, was a popular place for people to jump into the rushing water below from its arching trusses. The old bridge was replaced in 2023.

“It’s a moment of glee and fun as a girl returns to her Maine roots and takes a leap off the bridge with her friends,” Gaither said.

Gaither said the film crew, which is being produced and directed by Maine filmmakers Desi Van Til and Sean Meshaw, contacted local officials about closing the road for the day. Volunteers from the Brooklin Fire Department will also assist with the road closure, Gaither said. The crew did not have to pay any local fees for the road closure, Gaither said.

“We reached out to the Maine Department of Transportation, the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office and the selectmen’s office and all three came up with a traffic plan to help make a movie happen. The detour route doesn’t add too much to anyone’s drive,” Gaither said.

The stars of the film–with male and female lead actors–have not yet been disclosed. Asked whether the female lead will jump off the bridge for the movie in addition to stunt doubles, Gaither said he was not yet sure.

“Depends on how motivated she is,” he said. “If our lead talent is feeling excited and motivated, she may be doing jumps as well.”

The movie will begin shooting at other locations around Blue Hill on Monday, Sept. 14.
