Carl Cramer Scholarship named to assist students wanting to become mariners and shipwrights

BROOKLIN–WoodenBoat School has announced the creation of the Carl Cramer Scholarship. The scholarship will be available to students beginning in 2027. The scholarship is funded through the Charles Bruce Foundation. According to a press release, all students will be eligible to apply for one of two scholarships. To apply, students will submit a haiku.

First place entrants will receive a 50 percent scholarship, the release said. Second place will receive a 25 percent stipend toward their tuition fees.

Cramer’s daughters started the scholarship to honor their father’s life and legacy. “Brooklin wasn’t just Carl’s home for decades – it is also known as the Boat Building Capital of the World. And it is only fitting that Carl’s legacy should continue long after his passing,” the release said.

Cramer served as publisher for WoodenBoat Magazine for decades, the release said. He also served as publisher—and author—for Professional BoatBuilder Magazine. “He used these journals as a way to share his love of both the sea and the crafts that navigated them,” the release said.

The Carl Cramer Scholarship is stewarded by the Charles Bruce Foundation, a 501c3 “dedicated to social justice, the arts and the artists who create them.”
