Just outside the center of Blue Hill along South Street, Variable Movement is a fitness and rehabilitation center dedicated to helping the community thrive through movement. Founded in 2021 by Dan Waterman, the clinic’s mission centers on injury prevention and fostering wellness. Step inside and you’ll find a clean, professional space with tall ceilings, a private consultation room, and a full suite of thoughtfully arranged equipment.
Dan brings years of hands-on experience as a licensed athletic trainer and rehab coordinator to Variable Movement, where he specializes in physical rehabilitation. Many of his clients are living with pain from sciatica, plantar fasciitis, or back issues, and Dan has the expertise not only to guide them out of discomfort but also to move them past pain and into a healthier lifestyle.
Dan is joined by Bethany Charles (PTA, CPT, UESCA), who focuses on customized program design and individual training, and Emily Coleman (RN, BSN, CCRN, USAW, CF-L2), who brings energy and warmth to group classes. The team is known for compassionate, personalized support that empowers clients—and for their special attention to women's health. Variable Movement offers group fitness classes designed for women who are peri- and post-menopausal and seeking to improve bone strength and overall wellness.
The programs at Variable Movement can be tailored to challenge and support anyone, regardless of where they are on their fitness journey.
Variable Movement stands out with an approach centered on whole-person healthcare and truly meeting clients where they are. Whether you’re a newcomer looking to build a foundation from “ground zero” or a committed athlete working toward peak performance, the VM team can guide you.
Their impact reaches beyond the clinic doors. For Dan and his team, movement is more than exercise, it’s a way of life. They advocate for healthy, intentional routines as the backbone for happiness, and are active in partnering with the local Blue Hill YMCA, George Steven’s Academy, and community groups to support for healthier living.
For those looking to begin, Dan offers a bit of advice: “Start slow and feel safe in failing. Burnout can happen quickly, and one day off after going too hard can snowball if you’re not careful. Find something you enjoy doing that increases your heart rate and do it daily.”
Drop-in and monthly memberships are available for group classes, which run throughout the day on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Personal training starts with a free consultation and a 1-hour assessment, while rehabilitation is available in a wide variety of appointments.
Variable Movement is located at 40 South Street in Blue Hill. Visit their website to see their group class schedule or book an appointment, and follow them on Facebook and Instagram.
A custom rehabilitation plan at Variable Movement starts with a careful evaluation, goal setting, and evidence-based practice.
