Blue Hill husband-and-wife team create community through jiu jitsu

Joe and Jade Hatheway, owners and instructors of Three Points Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Blue Hill.

Nestled in a shared building with other local businesses on the Ellsworth Road, Three Points Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Blue Hill welcomes members of all ages with a vibrant sense of community. Beginners stepping onto the mat for the first time and experienced students alike find an atmosphere that is consistently positive and inclusive.

The gym is run by Jade and Joe Hatheway, a husband-and-wife team with backgrounds in healthcare, who are dedicated to building a safe, health-focused, and connected environment. Joe, a black belt, shares years of martial arts experience and infectious enthusiasm with his students, while Jade creates a supportive environment for every newcomer and family. Their philosophy revolves around three essentials: exercise, passion, and community. Children can develop confidence and discipline through their programs, while adults often rediscover motivation for a healthy lifestyle.

Brazilian jiu jitsu sometimes carries misconceptions, and may even seem intimidating or aggressive. In reality, it is a supportive and approachable martial art. The training centers on practical grappling techniques, always taught with safety, problem-solving, and mutual respect.

Jiu jitsu provides a full-body workout that improves physical fitness, strength, and self-defense skills, regardless of a person's size.

“Since there was no jiu jitsu school in Blue Hill when we moved here, we had no choice but to open our own! Besides just being fun, this art can have so many positive benefits. I’m very grateful to be able to offer a space where we can share this with our community,” Joe says of opening the gym.

Classes at Three Points cover all ages, and include specialty offerings like women-only classes or competition training. Designed with busy schedules in mind, their programming remains affordable and accessible because Jade and Joe believe that no one should be kept from participating due to cost. Every individual is encouraged to try their first class for free and experience the positive impact of jiu jitsu.

Three Points Jiu Jitsu is located at 380 Ellsworth Road, on the second floor, in Blue Hill. Visit their website to check out their schedule and sign up for a class and follow them on Facebook and Instagram

Jiu jitsu can offer children a range of benefits, including problem-solving skills, coordination, and boosted self esteem.
