THE U-TURN: Preening peacock on the loose; two old souls find each other
May 6, 2026
A peacock is on the loose on Deer Isle. Residents have seen the uncommon bird displaying his array of colors around the island. Many have seen the bird, but no one has been able to catch him.
Tiffany Eaton, of Deer Isle, spotted the peacock on Greenlaw District Road and shared this photo.
The bird has also been spotted in Sunshine, Greenlaw District, South Deer Isle and in Deer Isle Village.
Peacocks, which can have sharp talons, are territorial and can be aggressive during mating season in the spring. At this time, the bird’s origins are unknown.
Meanwhile, kindergartners Penrhyn Parker and Grace Morgioni seem to know exactly where they are going in this pic from Castine. The two look like old souls just taking a stroll to the library. Photo courtesy of Adams School teacher Monique Robertson.
