Polluting Herrick Bay is ‘unfair to our entire community’

Problem of pig fecal matter in Brooklin’s bay needs to be resolved

Thanks for the piece about the pollution fouling the waters and flats of upper Herrick Bay. Most of us are highly sympathetic to anyone trying to make a living from their land. They deserve our respect and admiration.

But when the problem of their runoff continues without resolution, it's unfair not only to the bay's precious resources and residents, but to our entire community. I know it has to do in part with the complexity of the wetland networks, but as a committed member of Brooklin's Harbor Committee, I'm embarrassed that this situation exists. As the owner of a broad waterfront property myself, I'm pretty sure the state would be on my case if we were fouling the waters.

I don't know if my farmer friend David [Reiley] needs more assistance or more pressure, but we definitely need to do something to get it resolved. The Shellfish Committee has worked hard for the town, and the bay deserves to be pristine again.
