A note from the Editor:
Welcome to The Rising Tide, a new source of news and ideas for the Blue Hill Peninsula and Deer Isle/Stonington. We are a nonprofit news source, and all of our content is free to read. No paywalls, no subscription fees.
The Rising Tide is an all-digital venture, with a website and social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube. We will publish online every week, and more as needed. We will send out an email each week with a news summary. Be sure to sign up for our email newsletter (it’s free, just like all of our content), and follow us on social media for frequent updates, including breaking news.
The Rising Tide is a community of local journalists who have come together to find ways to meet today’s news consumers. We aim to deliver objective news while welcoming commentary from all perspectives. We will celebrate our incredibly diverse communities and the talented, good people here. It doesn’t mean we won’t tell the hard stories or report the news. We will.
Our home in this corner of Maine faces many “rising tides,” including the actual changing ocean itself, which threatens our infrastructure and livelihoods. We also face an influx of new residents, and we must manage the challenges of those development pressures by, first of all, getting to know one another. Respect and understanding is the beginning of any solution.
But The Rising Tide is, most importantly, a nod to the old adage “a rising tide lifts all boats.” In this case, the tide is information—unbiased news, thought-provoking commentary, honest discussion of our challenges, and a celebration of our achievements—that level sets us all by being accessible to everyone. That is the mission of The Rising Tide.
It took a small army of people to get us here, too many to list individually: our reporters, board members, advisors, friends, families and supporters who gave their time, expertise and financial support (and often all three). The depth of my sincere thanks cannot adequately be conveyed.

Like everyone on our incredible team, I am passionate about this place. I grew up in Penobscot, went away to pursue a career in media and communications, and came home when I finally realized what I knew all along: that this is the best place on Earth. I still live in Penobscot, in the same farmhouse where I was raised. Like many of you, I feel like I’m the luckiest person in the world to be here, challenges and all. Your stories—our stories—are what make this place like no other in the world.
And so with that…The Tide is rising. Enjoy.
