BLUE HILL - The executive director of Blue Hill Heritage Trust has announced he will retire this February.

George Fields started working at the trust almost 13 years ago, first in a stewardship role, then as an associate director, and ultimately, in March of 2025, as the executive director. 

Fields, of Deer Isle, is a professional geologist in Maine and New Hampshire, and has lived on the peninsula for over two decades.

In a release, the trust said that Fields has been an important part of the organization’s history, energy and heart.

“During his time with the Trust, BHHT has undergone tremendous growth, including more than doubling conserved acreage - from nearly 6,327 acres in 2014 to more than 13,000 acres today,” the announcement said. Fields was also a key driver for the James W. Dow Internship Program, which creates opportunities for young people in the conservation space, the release said. 

With this position set to be replaced early next year, the trust is beginning a nationwide search for a new executive director. The release said Fields will assist with the leadership transition.
