BLUE HILL—There’s a new reason to get excited about lunch and dinner in Blue Hill.

The Blue Hill Deli will open on June 30, promising a fresh, locally-focused approach to sandwiches, pizza, and comfort food.

The idea for the eatery started as a food truck at the end of owner Ashley Munroe’s driveway. But when the lease of the old Subway building on South Street became available, she saw the opportunity for a brick-and-mortar restaurant. Munroe, a graduate of Eastern Maine Community College’s culinary program, said the deli will provide the community with high-quality, homemade options that stand out from the typical pre-made fare found elsewhere.

“We had a vision, honestly, immediately, because we already knew what we wanted to do for the food truck, so we just made it into a storefront,” Munroe said.

The driving philosophy behind Blue Hill Deli is a return to "cooking with heart and flavor." Munroe said that she wants to avoid the bland, processed, or pre-packaged ingredients often found in quick-service environments.

“Good food, good sandwiches,” Munroe said. “This is something for the community. I feel like the pizzas are gonna be our staples but we want it to be, we want it to be the subs, but that's not gonna be our main run.”

Munroe hopes the 22-seat restaurant is welcoming for families and offers something for everyone, and the deli’s menu was written with that in mind. It includes:

  • Sandwiches: The deli will feature a wide selection of hot and cold grinders, exclusively utilizing Boar’s Head meats and cheeses.

  • Pizza: A staple of the menu will be pizzas featuring homemade dough, Grande cheese and house-made sauce.

  • Specialties: The menu will also include calzones stuffed with mozzarella and ricotta, as well as a variety of sides including macaroni salad, potato salad, coleslaw, and chicken salad.

Munroe said the team plans to expand the menu in the coming months to include soups, take-home meals—meatballs, sausage, and pasta—and locally sourced baked goods from an Ellsworth based partner company. She also plans to offer Boar’s Head products by the pound for community purchase.

The deli will offer self-serve options, online ordering, and counter service. Beyond the food, Blue Hill Deli is positioning itself as a community hub on South Street.

"We are [primarily] catering to locals," Munroe said, but she hopes the menu will draw folks visiting the area as well. "We’re excited to bring something new, with our own twist on food".

Munroe is also committed to supporting local sports teams, with plans to offer delivery for student-athletes and parents and potential promotions, such as discounts for winning teams.

Blue Hill Deli will be closed on Mondays but open the rest of the week. For more information, visit www.bluehilldeli.com.
