The Maine Maritime Academy Corning School of Ocean Studies regularly hosts speakers on a variety of science and science adjacent topics.
Ocean Studies alumna Cristin Messerschmidt will give a talk entitled "From Research to Remediation". The seminar will detail Messerschmidt's career path from her undergraduate degree at Maine Maritime, through her graduate work at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) and into her current postion in environmental consulting. Highlights will include key elements of her time at MMA that she has found useful along the way. She will also discuss her graduate research and her current environmental consulting projects focused on clean up of contaminated sediment sites.
Cristin is an environmental consultant at Anchor QEA, where she primarily works on contaminated sediment clean up sites. Her day-to-day work includes various types of data analyses such as data visualization, environmental forensic analyses, and other site summary evaluations. These analyses are used to guide remedy decisions for sites that have not yet been remedied, or to analyze remedy effectiveness for sites that have already been cleaned up. Cristin graduated from Maine Maritime Academy in 2018 with a degree in marine science and small vessel operations. After undergrad, she attended the Virginia Institute of Marine Science where she gained her master’s degree in marine science with a focus in geological oceanography and graduated in 2021.
