Great egrets normally come to Penobscot in the post-breeding dispersal from Stratton Island off Old Orchard Beach during August and September, where they wade along the grassy fringes of Northern Bay in a solitary search for fish. A little smaller than a great blue heron, their all-white plumage, yellow bill, and blackish legs are distinctive.
