Red Cross in urgent need of Hancock County volunteers
Organization seeks people to become a ‘beacon of hope for a neighbor in need’

The American Red Cross is asking for Disaster Action Team volunteers to assist local families who have suffered from home fires and other disasters in Hancock County.
In a release, the Red Cross said team volunteers assisted at least 30 people in Hancock County with home fires and local disasters in the past year. Home fires specifically account for 90 percent of all Red Cross disaster responses.
Volunteers will provide immediate relief and assistance to “a neighbor in need.” Responsibilities include providing a safe place to stay, financial assistance, emotional support, health services and recovery planning.
Below are the requirements to volunteer:
Be at least 18 years old.
Be comfortable using technology and learning new systems.
Have reliable access to a cell phone and computer.
Be able to respond during scheduled on-call shifts.
Have a valid driver's license and/or reliable transportation to disaster scenes.
Work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Be comfortable interacting with people from diverse backgrounds.
Be able to function in dynamic and sometimes stressful environments.
"No one plans to have a home fire, but when they do, the Red Cross is there,” said Scott Guillerault, Ellsworth fire chief and Red Cross Northern and Eastern Maine Chapter board member. “To ensure no one faces these emergencies alone, we urgently need more disaster action team volunteers to meet the needs of our community.”
